Having a template for how to approach QA in terms of software development is essential for planning, communication, and buy-in from all stakeholders. These documents also serve as a way to engage and involve everyone’s voice in order to prevent scenarios where team members say that they didn’t agree to xyz process/support. This is a common flow that I’ve added to over the years that helps remind me at the start of a project what I need to remember to specifically address.

Just a flow document on a defect process that could be used as a template on projects. Team agreements on a process and flow of handling defects will prevent a lot of headaches over what next the next steps should be for a given defect. Having defined severities and priorities is also extremely important in order to prevent misunderstandings.
Defect Process (Download) There are obviously a lot of ways and extra flows for defects to consider.

This concept of bikeshedding actually has the chance to derail projects caught in largely irrelevant cycles that wastes time and prevents the delivering of any actual customer value.
Parkinson shows how you can go in to the board of directors and get approval for building a multi-million or even billion dollar atomic power plant, but if you want to build a bike shed you will be tangled up in endless discussions.

Fringe IT versus Hiding Out
By Tim Brown

Fringe IT I’ve always wanted to be at the fringes of IT and the boundaries it pushes, whether that be automation, cloud, etc. Conceptually, I think about being at the edge of a fence and having the will and desire to cut the wires, dig out the posts, and move them further out. It’ll take some effort, but the reward is worth it. My worst fear is getting complacent in a group or application, and then building an entire career around a single specialized product or service area.
